Where: 104 Gates Info Sciences Building, Stanford University, Palo Alto

Talk Background:

Have you heard about these?

What do they have in common?
There is an energetic and ingenious group of people under the leadership of K.R. Datye building a number of approaches to alternative energy, rural technology, watershed management and sustainable agriculture. The focus is to achieve reliance on local people's participation in production, direct and most efficient use of energy and resources, and least environmental degradation. The key is that most of them have been tested in the field at large and small scales, and a comprehensive approach to sustainable development is emerging.
About the Speaker:

Dr. Datye is a civil engineer with over 30 years of experience in planning, construction and operation of large scale irrigation, hydropower and infrastructure projects in India and Africa. He has worked both in Government and as an independent consultant for large private and public sector corporations. He has served on international committees charged with development and standardization of technical norms in hydraulic and geo-technical engineering. For the last 15 years, he has been deeply involved in rural development activities, initiating and leading a number of technology development projects in water, infrastructure and energy sectors. He continues to be involved in policy making committees, concerned with agriculture and rural development activities at both State and Federal government levels. He is a founding member of the Centre for Applied Systems Analysis and Development (CASAD) and Society for People's Participation in Ecosystem Management. He is also the author of Banking on Biomass, a book that articulates a radical new developmental strategy based on the renewable bio-energy and dispersed industrialization.
