The speaker will cover a broad spectrum of issues related to Women in
India; one of the issues being - the changes in the structure of our
society that are essential for the empowerment of women. She will
touch-up on Women's participation in Panchayati raj and the need for 33%
reservation for women in the parliament. Please join us for an insightful
evening as Dr. Giri shares her experiences with us.

About Dr. Mohini Giri

Dr. V. Mohini Giri, Social Activist, Leader in the women's movement,
specializing in human rights and gender justice, is renowned both
nationally and internationally for her committed work in empowering women
politically, socially, legally and economically. Belonging to an
illustrious family of scholars, civil servants and musicians, Mohini Giri
is the daughter-in-law of Late Shri V.V. Giri, former President of India.
Proficient in nine languages, Dr. Giri holds the doctorate from G.B.
Pant University and a post graduate degree in Ancient Indian History,
University of Delhi.As a chairperson of National Womens Commission, Dr.
Mohini gave a new direction to NCW and successfully implemented several
schemes for empowering women. She has contributed a lot in alleviating
the situation of war widows and has also held prominent positions with
several other groups such as Guild of Service, South Asia Womens peace
initiative, Governing Body of College of Applied Sciences, to name a few.
She also won several awards for her work including the Mahila Siromani
award in 1998. Some of her publications include 'Kanya - Exploitation of
Little Angels' (1998) and 'Emancipation and Empowerment of Women' (1996).
Driving directions

>From Highway 101
- Take the Embarcadero Rd (Westbound) eexit in Palo Alto
- Stay on Embarcadero and cross El Camiino Real into the Stanford
Campus where Embarcadero becomes Galvez Street
- Stay in the right lane and turn rightt onto Arboretum Rd. At the
traffic light, turn left on to Palm Drive, stay in the right lane
and at the next intersection, turn right onto Campus Dr.
- Parking Structure 1 will be to your lleft in about a third of a mile.
Parking is free on weekends.
- Walk out onto Campus Drive and go lefft. Walk past the Mudd Chemistry
Bldg and in about 300 yards, Gates Info Sciences will be on your left.
If you come to Via Ortega, you've gone too far.
>From Highway 280
- Exit on Alpine and turn east towards Stanford
- Turn right at Junipero Serra (first llight)
- Turn left on Campus Drive West (firstt light)
- Go about 1.2 miles on Campus Drive (ppast numerous stop signs and
construction zones) to Roth Way
- Turn right on Roth Way and immediatelly turn left into Parking
Structure 1. Parking is free on weekends.
- Walk out onto Campus Drive and go lefft. Walk past the Mudd Chemistry
Bldg and in about 300 yards, Gates Info Sciences will be on your left.
If you come to Via Ortega, you've gone too far.
