AID invites you to join us for another in our series of Sponsored Talks on Sunday May 19th. Our guest will be Dr. Sundararaman who is currently visiting the US in connection with the annual AID conference in Maryland. Dr Sundararaman is a wonderful speaker and the talk provides us a unique opportunity to share in his experience of several years of involvement in grass-roots science movements in India. As many of you would know, AID is actively involved in the Hundred Block Plan initiative by AIPSN, and Dr. Sundararaman is one of the architects of the plan.
Dr.Sundararaman is an active leader and vice-president of the All India People's Science Network (AIPSN). He has been associated, both as founder member and office bearer, with the Tamilnadu and Pondicherry Science Forums, which are constituents of the AIPSN. These organisations are active in policy interventions and in catalysing people's initiatives in the area of science communication, literacy and basic education, primary health care and rural development schemes that aim to improve the quality of life of the weaker sections of society. From 1989-1991, he worked on deputation for the ministry of human resources development for building up networks of NGOs in the northern and more underdeveloped states. Since 1990, he has been co-ordinator of the health programmes of the Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti (BGVS), and has guided and initated several innovative community health worker programmes in 120 villages in Tamilnadu. He has published and authored over 60 books ands booklets, as part of the BGVS health camapaigns.
Dr.Sundararaman is also chairperson of the Center for Ecology and Rural Development (CERD), which was founded in 1996 at Pondicherry. CERD presently has over 20 full-time committed scientists and technologists who work with people in developing technologies and programme approaches that prioritize the needs of the poor and which can lead to a more equitable and sustainable development paradigm.
Dr.Sundararaman has been teaching medicine and clinical research since 1984. He is currently professor of medicine at JIPMER, pondicherry.
